On the Thursday evening of the Platinum Jubilee, the Parish Council, with the kind consent of the Reis family at Manor Farm, hosted the lighting of the beacon at Starve Knowle, the highest point in the parish. With some 30 or more parishioners present and after a few words from the Chairman of the parish council, Cllr Pete Szczesiak, the beacon was lit at the appropriate time, as were beacons across the country.
On the Saturday afternoon and evening, organised by Jennie Brooks and her team, laid on a barbecue in front of the village hall for aone hundred ticket holders. There were marquees should the weather have turned inclement with a team of barbecues outside the hall and an icecream van. Inside the hall there was a well stocked bar and a shift system of bar staf to keep the villagers well stocked with food and drink to keep everyone happy.
On a much cooler and overcast day on the Sunday a self serve picnic was hosted under the marquees in front of the hall for 30-40 village people. Tea and coffee was available for all with soft drinks for the children or those who had drunk just too much tea and coffee. The weather did close in by the end of the afternoon but Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2 was toasted by her people in a truly British weekend of events in Compton Bassett. The appreciation of us all went to our own Jennie Brooks for her efforts and organisation of the whole weekend at the hall and to Charles Reis and Pete Szcsesiak for the beacon on Thursday.
