They received wedding presents as food from the Commonwealth and foreign countries as food was still strictly rationed in the UK. The newly married couple wanted to distribute these gifts to those who were less well-off than themselves. One recipient was Florence Taylor (nee Rumming), Jim Taylor’s mother.
The items sent included tea, chocolate, sugar, tobacco, nuts, rice, dried and canned fruit, canned meat and fish, honey, dripping, fruit juice, canned soup, and powdered milk.
It was distributed by the Commonwealth Gift Centre section of the Ministry of Food and the Women’s Volunteer Services
With thanks to Jim Taylor
